Telescopes

Updated January 20th 2004

Willow Creek Astronomical Observatory has two telescopes, both manufactured by Celestron International. The first one is a portable Ultima 8 PEC eight inch aperture Schmidt-Cassegrain, used primarily for visual observing. Our main telescope is an 11 inch aperture Ultima 11 PEC Computerized Schmidt-Cassegrain which is mounted in the observatory on a custom pier.

The telescope is fork mounted and attached to a custom pier using a heavy duty wedge and latitude adjuster to aid in polar alignment. Focal lengths available are F/10 or F/6.3 with Celestron focal reducer. It has Starbright multicoated optics, 8 x 50mm illuminated Polaris finder scope and servo-controlled Byers worm gear drive with built-in periodic error correction (PEC) and four separate tracking speeds (lunar, solar, sidereal, and King rates). Celestron has a long standing reputation for optical excellence and our telescopes live up to it.

The pier was custom manufactured to provide optimal floor space in the observatory. The pier is a 6 x 6 inch, 1/8 inch thickness, steel channel with an telescoping arm that extends out at a 45 degree angle. At the top of the arm is a mounting plate for the wedge and telescope. The telescoping arm is adjustable in height and length which allows the greatest flexibility in optimizing telescope size and placement for maximum unobstructed floor space. The pier is bolted to the concrete floor and filled with sand to minimize vibration. The pier configuration is very stable with no vibration from walking on concrete floor effecting the telescope.

This Telescope is primarily used for visual observing and recording sunspots. In the
past we used this scope for extensive imaging.
