HASU PATEL, a disciple of Sitar legend Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb has distinguished her, as one of few female artists performing Sitar, India’s most popular string instrument. As a performer, composer, and a teacher, she has dedicated her life to preserving and propagating the classical musical traditional music of ancient India in its pristine purity.

She began her musical studies in early childhood. After many years of rigorous training called Sadhana, she became the first woman to receive a music degree with Gold medal in the 75 years history of the Faculty of Fine Arts Baroda, India. She has received many awards, scholarships, and fellowships including at the age of 21, the first prize winner in the State of Gujarat for the stringed instrument competition held by All India Radio.
Hasu plays the Sitar with a very special style known as Gayaki Ang (vocal Style) which she learned from her two gurus – Prof. N. B. Kikani and the Sitar legend, Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb of Imdad Khani Gharana, whose innovative technique of Gayaki Ang is the most significant contribution to music inheritance.

She also offers her unique talent to terminally patients as therapy. To spread the art of Indian music, she performs at Jazz festivals, lectures/demonstrates in schools, colleges, private/public organizations, radio/television, music conferences, and hospitals around the country. Her concerts at Chicago Jazz Festival and Woodstock’s 30th year music festival 1999 at Yasgurs Farm were well received by very receptive audiences. Hasu’s duets with Western Classical and Jazz musicians have delighted audience.

Hasu is affiliated with Ohio Arts Council (Ohio Artists on Tour 1999-2001), Columbus Arts Council, and Arts Midwest. Hasu teaches Sitar, Tabla, and Vocal music to many area students at her Sursangam school of music as well as Oberlin College of Ohio and Cuyahoga Community College of Ohio at eastern campus.

To her, Indian Classical music is a rare and sacred art, which calls for special attention and total Dedication – a Sadhana.

Hasu’s debut album Gayaki Sitar presents in her bold exposition of Alap (improvisation) embodies the very essence of pure classicism. The music is spiritual and meditational, and rendered as such to bring forth the transcendental experience of the moods. Gayaki Sitar has received good reviews on Internet (www.amazon.com).
