Agility is a set course of obstacles that dog and handler have to navigate correctly and with as few faults as possible. Dogs run off leash, and the handler is not allowed to touch the dog or the equipment. Agility is a timed event, so speed and accuracy are key! I have had lots of fun with agility and have been competing with Cindy in AKC agility since 2002. Cindy currently has 4 AKC agility titles and is working on 2 more! Agility has been an awesome way to further the bond between me and my dogs, and it is great exercise for me and the dogs!

The AKC has 3 levels of competition. Novice, Open and Excellent. Novice is where everyone starts, and in order to move out of novice you have to get 3 qualifying scores, or legs, under at least 2 different judges.

In order to receive a title and move on to the next level, the dog must earn 3 qualifying scores, also called legs, under at least 2 different judges. The requirements for qualifying (Q) vary between the levels, increasing in difficulty as you go on. In Excellent competition you are allowed no errors and each run must be perfect to Q.

The AKC currently offers 3 different classes for competition. Standard, Jumpers with Weaves (JWW) and FAST. The FAST class is new as of 2007 and as of right now I have yet to compete in it so I really don’t know what it’s about. The standard class consists of everything you typically think about when you think agility. Dog walk, A-frame, Teeter, jumps, tunnels and weave poles. The JWW class consists of only Jumps, tunnels and weave poles, no contact obstacles such as the A-frame or dog walk.

Agility trials are, unfortunatly, rather expensive. So we go to about 2 trials a year and below is what we have accomplished so far.
