Disc Doggin' is a one of a kind experience. The atmosphere is fun and light hearted even at the highest levels of competition. This sport truly embraces the idea that competeing with your dog is supposed to be fun, first and foremost.
Anyone with a dog who chases frisbees can play. All of my dogs truly enjoy playing frisbee, it is one of their most favorite things to do, perhaps right after herding sheep! Even if your dog doesnt catch a single toss, everyone is very encouraging and supportive. You can't find a better group of people.
We are members of The Flying Houdz of Louisville who are the local disc dog club. We have regular practices during the summer and spur of the moment ones during the winter months. We try to all go to compititions together, which makes for a very fun filled weekend.
There are basicaly 2 different areas of compitition. Toss and Fetch and Freestyle. Toss and Fetch (TF) is pretty simple. You throw the frisbee from behind a line, you get points depending on how far down the field the dog catches the disc. If the disc is caught and all 4 of the dogs feet are off the ground, you get an extra 1/2 point. The point scales and distance varies by orginization. But basacally there are 0 points from the start line to the 10 yard line. Between 10 and 20 yards is 1 point, 20 and 30 yards is 2 points between 30 and 40 yards is 3 points and past the 40 yard line is 4 points. You have a set amount of time to throw, 60-90 sec depending on the format. Highest score wins. The rules vary a little bewteen the different disc dog orginzations but thats the basic jist of it.
Freestyle is a whole other ball game. That is where you see all the cool flip and vaults and tricks. We are still working on all of that! The judging is complicated and honestly I dont really understand it. At this point Ellie and I are working with our "non-plan, plan" which is basically we go out and wing the whole 90 seconds. It's never the same thing twice tho, thats for sure! lol! We have a fantastic time doing it and that is really all that matters anyway.
