The following is a list of approaches that people on the canine epilepsy email list are using in addition to, and sometimes instead of, medications. Many people feel that as natural a diet as possible is important, and low protein seems to help some of the dogs. Several people use Dr. Pitcairn's book to find recipes to cook for their dog. The rest try to avoid preservatives, etc., as much as possible. Some also feel that frequent meals for our dogs, (instead of one or 2 meals per day), can help. Some dogs are helped by a hypoallergenic diet. Some experts feel that there can be a connection between allergies and seizures. Many people give their dogs some vitamins or supplements. Here are some of those: Vit. B complex, L-Tyrosine, Taurine, Calcium, Coenzyme Q10, DMG, Kelp, multiple vitamin tablets, Vit. C, (some use Ester C), Acidophious, Bifidus, Prozyme, Chinese herbs, zinc, Nueroplex (homepathic for brain), Vit. E, Cytozyme B, ( made by Biotics. It is Neo-natal bovine brain pills), Hyocyamis (homeopathic for nervous agitation), Valerian, Skullcap, Protexin (probiotic powder), Calms Forte (homeopathic remedy), flower essences,(like Rescue Remedy, or custom formulas of flower essences), and hormones like melatonin or progesterone. People are using acupuncture, acupressure, massage, chiropractic care, Reiki, magnets, T-Touch, and gold bead or gold wire implants. Some people use Karo syrup or Rescue Remedy if they think that a seizure is about to occur, (sometimes it helps prevent a seizure), or as soon as possible afterwards, to help the dog recover. All of the above can be used either instead of or in addition to the traditional medications. There is research to back up the use of some of the above, but not all of the above. There is definite disagreement among people about some of the above, so please do your own research and find out if it is appropriate for your dog, if you choose to look into any of the alternative approaches. Your vet will be your best guide for your individual dog. The links below will provide some information on medications, supplements, and various alternative approaches.
