Infant Head Molding

Our research indicates that the practice of infant head molding -- the application of pressure and/or bindings to babies' heads to alter their shapes -- is still a common practice among certain ethnic groups. Apparently, not many medical/dental personnel or anthropologists are aware that the practice still occurs. We published an article in the ARCHIVES OF FAMILY MEDICINE (January/February, 1998, (7): 88-90) documenting the practice. We are still amassing data concerning who teaches whom the particulars about infant head molding, when the techniques are taught, and how widespread the practice is. If you have any information about INFANT HEAD MOLDING, please e-mail me (esteinberg@ameritech.net).

WOMEN'S KNOWLEDGE -- We place infant head molding into the category of Women's Knowledge -- information that women teach only to other women on a "need-to-know" basis. For example, in some cultures, a mother, aunt, older relative or midwife, might teach the new mother traditional child-care practices following the birth of her baby. Women's Knowledge is event specific information, and if you know of any examples you would be willing to share, please e-mail me (esteinberg@ameritech.net).

MEN'S KNOWLEDGE -- Of course, there is Men's Knowledge, too. If you know of any examples, such as information that men pass along only to other men or young boys on a "need-to-know" basis, please e-mail me (esteinberg@ameritech.net).

We will safeguard your identity, and promise to use your information in a responsible, scholarly fashion. THANK YOU!
