David Ness, B.M. Northern Illinois University; M.M. Northwestern University,
is a freelance musician in the Chicago area. Currently, Dave is the guitar
instructor and jazz ensemble director at Carthage College. His duties at
Carthage also include teaching popular music in America, jazz improvisation,
jazz history and directing the guitar ensemble. He also is a guitar
instructor for the College of Lake County and for the Music Institute of
Chicago. In the past, he has taught jazz courses at Northwestern University
and was the guitar instructor at Judson College. Dave is a sought-after
clinician, having taught and presented clinics at many schools in the
Illinois and Wisconsin area. Dave is featured on recordings on Southport
Records and has arranged music for Danilo Perez, pianist; Shirley King, blues
singer and daughter of B.B. King; and Judy Roberts, pianist and vocalist. One
of his arrangements can be heard on Shirley King's album "Daughter of the
Blues." His arrangements have also included three big band arrangements for
Tom Tallman's jazz ensemble at the College of DuPage. His article on
guitarist Freddie Green can be found in the November 1999 edition of the
International Association of Jazz Educators Journal. He regularly can be
found performing in the Chicago area in classical, latin, and jazz groups.
